Synopsis of Lockwood & Co. The Screaming Staircase (book 1)
When the dead come back to haunt the living, Lockwood & Co. step in . . .
For more than fifty years, the country has been affected by a horrifying epidemic of ghosts. A number of Psychic Investigations Agencies have sprung up to destroy the dangerous apparitions.
Lucy Carlyle, a talented young agent, arrives in London hoping for a notable career. Instead she finds herself joining the smallest, most ramshackle agency in the city, run by the charismatic Anthony Lockwood. When one of their cases goes horribly wrong, Lockwood & Co. have one last chance of redemption. Unfortunately this involves spending the night in one of the most haunted houses in England, and trying to escape alive.
Set in a city stalked by spectres, The Screaming Staircase is the first in a chilling new series full of suspense, humour and truly terrifying ghosts. Your nights will never be the same again . . .
This is an incredibly underrated series its unbelievable. Do you like paranormal fantasy/mystery? Then you’ll probably enjoy this. If you’re looking for humour, horror, chaos, friendship and conspiracy then you’ll love this! If you’re looking for romance you won’t find it here. This is a YA paranormal fantasy/mystery series that follows a group of teenagers who are part of a Psychic Investigation Agency.
The books take place in England which has become overrun by ghosts and spirits that cause a lot of trouble and can kill you if you’re touched. To combat this horror Psychic Investigation Agencies comprised of children are the only people able to get rid of them. Children are able to either see or interact with ghosts but not all children can. When the children become adults they no longer possess the psychic abilities to interact or see the ghosts.
There are five main character throughout the series which include:
- Lucy Carlyle – First book +, interact with ghosts
- Antony Lockwood – First book +, see ghosts
- George Cubbins – First book +, researcher with minor abilities
- Holly Monroe – Second book +, minor abilities
- The Skull – Second book +, psychic relic
The books are told from Lucy’s POV and we get to see some crazy cases the crew get pulled into and we see a lot of havoc and trouble these character cause, and they cause A LOT of trouble!
As the series progresses the Lockwood & Co. crew uncover a lot of things the psychic investigation agency Big Whigs don’t want anyone to know. They uncover a huge conspiracy and some very shocking truths about a certain person.
All of the characters are amazing in their own way but my favourites are definitely Lucy, Lockwood and The Skull. Lucy and Lockwood’s friendship is one of the greatest things in this series, they are adorable and work so well together, they get each other and convey what they are thinking with just a look. BUT another friendship which is hilarious is Lucy and The Skull. As Lucy can interact with ghosts shes the only one able to talk to The Skull who is a psychic relic. The skull is vulgar, sarcastic, rude and a huge comedic relief. The skull is vital in the teams investigations as it can sense other spirits/ghosts that the crew can’t.
I was immediately hooked when I started the first book The Screaming Staircase, I listened to it on Audio and it was so good. The story is captivating, fast paced, intriguing and all around a lot of fun. Each book in the series didn’t disappoint at all and they actually got better as they went on. Some series the books can kind of dwindle off and aren’t as great as the beginning but that’s not the case here.
If you want a quick read dull of action, humour and amazing characters, pick this series up! If you have the chance to listen to the audiobooks I highly recommend that , they are excellent!
