Books I Wasted My Time On #1

Sometimes there are those books that just absolutely suck. I mean people like them but they are just not for you. I’m unfortunately the type of person who doesn’t DNF books and I get a few duds every now and then. So let’s delve into some of the books that were NOT worth my time we’ll start with the most recent ones. Just reminding you if you haven’t read my bio I am EXTREMELY sarcastic, lots of vulgar language is used here so if you aren’t a fan of that.. sorry?

Brightly burning by Alexa Donne

Brightly Burning

Oh boy. If you follow me on Instagram then you would have seen me rant about this utter piece of garbage. I hated this book so much. Basically its a Jane Eyre retelling in space. THAT’S IT. The author barely changed anything about the story just took Jane Eyre and threw it into space.

She kept the customs and dress of the 1800’s in space. This is the part that made my blood boil the most. Why are these bitches wearing dresses in space, in the future, surely a jumpsuit or pants would be more comfortable and practical, especially if you are and engineer and have to fix stuff all the time.

Not only did these people dress archaic the customs were also bizarre. The women just want to get married they don’t seem to have any dreams or aspirations of their own. This is the future, we’ve come a long way since this time period. It pissed me off to see an author throw women back into this sort of bullshit situation. Also people die YOUNG, like 30 years old young… WHAT. Excuse me, but if you can live in SPACE you have the advanced technology and medicine so people aren’t kicking the bucket so young. Its like the author didn’t even try to actually fit the story of Jane Eyre into the future. F ME. And why is there a need for a governess in the future???? THERE ISN’T.

This book was just a disaster for me. Don’t get me wrong I love history and historical fiction but if you are going to retell a loved classic then retell it don’t just change the setting. The author could have done so many cool things with this for example: make the love interest and AI, make the main character a cyborg, give the main character a different goal than being a governess. Make the story fit the time.

Anyways, I hated it. My full review can be found here on Goodreads.

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3.1)

I didn’t hate this book but it was complete trash which is what I expected it to be. Don’t come at me with your defence of this book. I don’t care I didn’t like it, you can’t change my opinion.

Anyways, there was a lot I didn’t like about the story but the main thing that stood out was Rhysand. What the hell happened to the Rhysand we know and love? This simpering idiot isn’t the Rhysand we all fell in love with. Hes basically a lost horny puppy following Feyre around. It’s like SJM forgot who her characters were, where is the confident, strong headed leader we all saw? GONE. Not only was the way he acted and talked bizarre but his treatment of NESTA was insane. Rhysand, the man who saves damaged women, gives them a home and makes them feel safe treated Nesta like complete garbage. Nesta is beyond damaged and clearly needs help and he treats her like shit? WTF, this didn’t make sense.

Bedsides Rhysand being out of character, everyone else was too. And Feyre in this book was a total bitch and self centred.

Okay enough about the shitty characters. Some real issues with this book were the fanfic-esque scenes for example: the sex scene while flying, the “wall” scene, feyre and rhysand baby, hating on Nesta. These are all things MOST of the fandom wanted.

Everyone wanted the “wall” scene which SJM threw in and it was fucking WEIRD. So weird. A lot of people (excluding me) wanted Feyre and Rhysand to have a baby and SJM set them up for that. Gag me. Feyre has an ETERNITY, a LIFETIME to have a kid, she was so adamant about wanting to just spend time with Rhys for a long time before having kids then all of a sudden BAM “I want a baby” Fuck off. Then there was the treatment of Nesta, I know a lot of the fandom doesn’t like her but I do and the way she was treated in this was complete crap. SJM did her dirty and I hated it.

The fandom asked and SJM gave.

I went into this book with very low expectations and they were met.

Full rant can be found here.

That’s all I’m going to do for now, if I go on I might blow a gasket. There are more books that I disliked and they will be in future post so stay tuned.
